Phill Kline Visits LifeCare!
LifeCare was one of the happy recipients recently of monies from a settlement against Salton, Inc., a manufacturere of George Foreman Grills. Earlier this summer the court decided that these monies should go to non-profit agencies that promote nutrition.
Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline is familiar with the work done in Pregnancy Resource Centers. He knows that we assist in the ducation of prenatal development and emphasize the need for good nutirition during pregnancy, proper prenatal care and the importance of forming a bond between the mother and her unborn child.
In the 2004 Kansas Kids Count Data Book, statistics show that Franklin County needs improvement in reducing births to school-age mothers. There is a higher incidence of low birth weight babies within in this age group. Many young mothers dod not understand the importance of proper prenatal care and good nutrition during pregnancy or the threat to their baby by smoking, drinking, or taking drugs. If we can start these babies off with a healthy beginning, we may be able to prevent the physical and emotional pain of having a premature baby or a baby with physical handicaps, not to mention thousands of dollars in health care.
Pregnancy Resource Centers, like LifeCare, also help with nutrition after the baby is born. We supply formula and baby foodl to those who cannot afford it, as well as information on breast feeding and bottle feeding. The purpose is to give new moms a mentor relationship with older (more experienced) mothers who can help them when they have questions about their babies. Many of our clients don't have these maternal relationships naturally, so we try to stand in the gap. We do not take the place of their family doctor, but we become family if they need one! It helps to have nurses on staff who can evaluate mentally the condition of a child and make the proper referrals, but we do not give medical information to our clients. Sometimes our girls just need a tip from someone who has been through the process and can give advice. Our ongoing parenting classes address many issues, even if the girls don't know what questions to ask. It's a win-win situation.
Our thanks to Phill Kline and his staff for recognizing and appreciating the work being done at Pregnancy Resource Centers across Kansas, and for blessin us with a check for $15,114.32! To put that in perspective, that is about half of our operating budget for a year! As we told Phill when he was at LifeCare, God works in mysterious ways! We are grateful to both!
